What is Orthodontics?

In Greek Ortho means straight, and not tooth. Orthodontics therefore directly translates as straight teeth! The focus of orthodontics is to move and align skew non-functional teeth to a normal functional and aesthetic position.

Why is orthodontic treatment necessary?

Teeth are placed in specific relation to each other for ideal function

1. Speech
Well-aligned teeth facilitate proper pronunciation of words

2. Oral Hygiene
Poorly aligned dentitions are more difficult to clean and in the long term may lead to loss of teeth.

3. Aesthetics
Teeth are an integral part of one's personal appearance. A badly aligned and asymmetrical dentition will definitely detract from a person's good looks.

How does orthodontic treatment work?

Dental skeletal malocclusions are corrected by applying pressure on the teeth and bone by means of orthodontic appliances.

Service delivery
Patients are treated by Dr. Dippenaar himself, assisted by qualified oral hygienists who received training at university level.

What is the time frame of orthodontic treatment?

Two questions are important to orthodontic patients

  • 1. When do I get my braces?
  • 2. When do the braces come off?

The estimated duration of orthodontic treatment will be given to each patient at the commencement of treatment as it differs from patient to patient. Usually fixed appliences are used for approximately 18 to 24 months.

What does treatment cost?

Cost of treatment differs from patient to patient. The cost estimate of each individual patient will be given to the patient at the end of the first examination visit and depends on the degree of the severity of the malocclusion. NB! The examination, records and diagnoses are charged according to the National Recommended Price List.

Who can receive orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is not only meant for young children or teenagers; on the contrary; more and more adults receive orthodontic treatment to improve dental function and aesthetics. Successfull orthodontic treatment can be done at any age as long as the supporting bone around the teeth and the gingiva (gums) are in a healthy condition! Up to 20% of orthodontic patients are adults. Your general dental practitioner will indicate the ideal time for cevery individual child for orthodontic treatment.
